A story in three acts

Why tutors, students, and teams switch to a live collaborative whiteboard

Every online class has the same three villains: lag, too many apps, and a board only one person can draw on. Here’s one evening of it — and the week after.

Act I The problem

  1. Tuesday, 7:00 pm

The class starts, and the drawing doesn’t

Sam tutors maths online. They draw a triangle to explain area, but on the students’ screens it arrives seconds later, a piece at a time. By the time the line shows up, Sam has already moved on.

“Can everyone see this?” — for the fourth time.

  2. 7:12 pm

    Three apps for one lesson

Voice is in a video call, the board is in tab seven, questions land in a chat somewhere else. Sam spends the class switching windows, and the students spend it finding where the lesson went.

Half the lesson is spent managing the lesson.

  3. 7:25 pm

Only one person holds the pen

A student wants to try the next step on the board. On a screen share they can only watch, so the class turns into a broadcast. Nobody can point, sketch an answer, or work a problem together.

“Can I try?” “…just tell me and I’ll draw it.”

  4. 7:40 pm

    The Wi-Fi drops

Sam’s connection blinks for a moment. When it comes back, the last ten minutes of working on the board are gone, and everyone has to rejoin the call.

There has to be something better than this.

Connection lost — your last changes were not saved

Act III The class that works

  1. Next Tuesday, 7:00 pm

Everyone draws, live, in one room

Sam draws and every student sees the line as it’s being drawn — around 85 ms in our hour-long tests. Voice and chat sit on the same board, students sketch their own answers, and each topic gets its own page to zoom in and out of.

    “Ohh, now I get it.”

  2. 7:40 pm

The Wi-Fi drops again. Nothing is lost.

Sam’s connection blinks, just like last week. CanvaRoom reconnects by itself and catches up, every stroke is still there, and the call keeps going because voice runs directly between the people in it.

    Nobody even noticed.

  3. 8:00 pm

A board full of everyone’s thinking

The class ends with a page covered in the students’ own work. Sam saves a snapshot to look back on, exports the page as a PDF for the students, and starts next week’s board from where this one left off.

Same students. Same Wi-Fi. A completely different class.

  4. Hand out the notes

Export any page as a PDF for tonight’s homework, a PNG for the group chat, or a crisp SVG for slides.

Is CanvaRoom free?

Every new account gets a free trial of 30 minutes of active use (the clock only runs while CanvaRoom is open in front of you): up to two boards, with two people besides you on each, live drawing, voice, chat, and templates. After the trial, the free plan keeps your first board for you to use on your own. Premium is a one-time payment of $25 for 3 months, $45 for 6 months plus 15 days free (save 10%), or $75 for 12 months plus a month free (save 25%) (in India: ₹2,350, ₹4,230 or ₹7,050), with nothing renewing on its own, and adds unlimited boards and people, export, images, and HD recording. Scratch boards stay free with no sign-up.

How can I pay for Premium?

Outside India you pay in US dollars with PayPal, or with a debit or credit card where PayPal offers it. In India you pay in rupees by UPI, card or netbanking. Either way it is a single payment: nothing renews on its own, and we email you a few days before Premium ends.

Do the people I invite need an account?

No. Share an invite link and they can join as a guest with just a name. They only need an account to create boards of their own.

Is drawing really live?

Yes. Strokes stream to everyone on the board while you draw, typically in under a tenth of a second, instead of appearing only when you lift the pen.

Can we talk while we draw?

Every board has a built-in voice room and chat, so you do not need a separate meeting app. Voice works best for groups of up to about eight people.

Can I try it without signing up?

Open a scratch board from the home page. It lives only in your browser tab; create an account when you want to save and share it.

Can I export my board?

With Premium, each page can be exported as a PNG image, an SVG, or a PDF. Scratch boards can be exported on any plan.
